Police Detain Suspect in Edward “Scrubby” Saldano’s Murder
Police have detained a man in connection with the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Edward Saldano, also known as “Scrubby”, who was killed Thursday afternoon near Amara Avenue and Dean Street in Belize City.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found several expended shells and traces of blood at the scene of the brazen midday shooting.
Surveillance footage captured the attack, showing Saldano riding his bicycle when a man approached from across the street. A tussle followed, and Saldano fell to the ground. The shooter then fired at least five shots at his body and head before fleeing. “A dispute arose, and the male person, and this was captured on police camera, was seen retrieving a firearm, which he used to fire several shots, which resulted in the demise of Mr Saldano,” said ASP Stacy Smith.
Police later confirmed Saldano’s death at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and said the detained suspect was picked up in the general area of the shooting.
When asked if the killing was gang‑related, Smith said investigators are still pursuing leads. “No clear motive has been established as yet,” she said.
Saldano was known to the police and had previously faced charges, including a 2024 robbery case.
