Police Dismiss Kidnapping Claims in Dangriga Man’s Disappearance
A relative of missing Dangriga man Jericho Humes has told police there is no truth to claims that he was kidnapped. Humes, however, remains unaccounted for, and the case is currently being treated as a missing persons investigation.
ASP Stacy Smith told reporters Wednesday that officers spoke directly with his brother, who confirmed that he saw a video but insisted the person in it was not his brother.
“It is a matter that is still a missing persons case and is being investigated from that perspective,” Smith said.
Smith said police were unable to determine how the relative came to receive the video and noted that “whosoever sent it would be somebody that needs to be investigated.”
The update comes after other relatives alleged Tuesday that they had been receiving calls from individuals demanding $10,000 for Humes’ release. The callers communicated in Spanish from what appeared to be a Mexican area code and sent a photo appearing to show Humes with a knife held to his neck.
They also warned that police involvement would cost him his life. Police have not confirmed any of those claims.
Humes was last seen leaving for work on a Wednesday morning. His home was subsequently found ransacked, with a door forced open and a pot of food left to spoil.
