Police Investigate Suspicious Death of Gilbert Conorquie

The Belize Police Department is tonight trying to piece together a troubling mystery. A man who hadn’t been seen by his family since Sunday was discovered dead in his own community, his body already decomposing. This afternoon, investigators confirmed injuries were found on thirty-nine-year-old Gilbert Conorquie. Now, his loved ones are asking the heartbreaking question: who would want to harm someone they describe as humble and harmless? News Five’s Paul Lopez has the details.

The family of Belize City resident Gilbert Conorquie was in shock and disbelief at the scene where he was found dead. Just off this busy road in Port Loyola, his body was quickly decomposing inside an overgrown abandoned lot. The foul stench alerts residents of its presence. Conorquie’s family last saw him on Sunday. An official missing flier was issued on Monday.

“Police officers visited an area off Ceasar Ridge Road Belize City as a consequence of a report of a decomposed body in the vicinity being found in that area. The body has since been identified as Gilber Conorquie, thirty-nine-years of age, a Belizean of a Rivero Street address. Mr. Conorquie’s body exhibited signs of injury and it now awaits a postmortem examination. What we do know is that on the twenty-seventh of October a relative reported him missing, last seeing him on the twenty-sixth of October.”

 

One family member told News Five that Conorquie left home Sunday and never returned. They explained that he is not the type to cause trouble with anyone. He is described as his father’s right hand and a humble person.   His family is tonight questioning why anyone would want to kill him in his own neighborhood where he was born and raised.

“Do police know if he was killed in that area or dumped there?”

“The ongoing investigation has not established that as yet. We know that he is a resident of the area.”

“There are security cameras around. Have police spoken to people who owns them?”

“Certainly police have done their canvassing of the area and have interviewed several persons who they believe can assist with the investigation.”

 

Conorquie’s lifeless body was discovered in a bushy area at the corner of an abandoned lot. The property is directly across from the Wilton Cumberbatch Field, and it features a heavily trafficked walkway. Security cameras are situated on a neighboring building and may be able to provide authorities with critical clues. Police cameras are also mounted in the immediate vicinity. This morning, the victim’s family members gathered at the scene waiting anxiously for authorities to process the scene. His sister was then allowed to enter the barrier to identify the body. It was a moment of sadness and anger for the relative. The family says they will leave their brother’s killer in the hands of God. Reporting for News Five, I am Paul Lopez.
