Police Officer Charged with Rape

A 26-year-old Belizean police officer has been formally arrested and charged with the crime of rape, following a report made by a 22-year-old woman from southern Belize.

According to police, the alleged incident occurred on the night of Friday, September 26, around 11:30 p.m. The woman reported that she had been socialising with friends and family when she accepted a ride home. During the journey, she alleges that she was sexually assaulted.

The media asked the Belize Police Department to release the identity of the accused. The department said, “To protect the victim’s identity, the officer’s name will not be released.”
