Police Pressed on Budna’s Disappearance, Rights Concerns

And circling back to Monday’s press conference with the Commissioner of Police, reporters didn’t hold back when it came to questions about Joseph Ryan Budna’s disappearance. One of the big concerns raised was whether Budna’s rights as a Belizean citizen may have been violated. Another pressing issue? The violent nature of the crime he’s accused of. The Commissioner responded to those questions, but the situation continues to raise serious concerns as the investigation unfolds.

“Of course any crime or any violent crime or any nature of that before that incident occurred is of concern to the Belize Police Department. But what I can confirm is that an investigation is underway to establish the exact facts. The allegations are serious allegations being made and the purpose of the investigation is to uncover exactly what has occurred. And I do not want to prejudge the findings of the investigation by confirming or denying any specific details. Let us allow the investigation process to take its course. Like I said, anybody could say anything and if I could get a dollar for every rumor being made then I could get be a millionaire by now. But we are taking all reports we are following all investigative leads and wherever that leads us to the chips will fall where they may.”
