Police Say Evidence Points to “Accidentally Self-Inflicted” Shooting of Camalote Man

Police say the investigation into the shooting death of Andy Suazo remains open, though evidence so far points to an accidental, self‑inflicted discharge.

Suazo was socialising with a friend on a property in Camalote on March 17 when a firearm discharged, striking him in the upper body. He was rushed to hospital but did not survive.

Speaking at a police press briefing, Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith said investigators have gathered multiple statements, including caution statements, and completed a post-mortem examination. Those findings have been compiled into a case file to be forwarded for guidance.

“The indication that we have received in relation to the evidence is that it may have been accidentally self-inflicted,” Smith said. “However, it is not a closed investigation. We continue to investigate this matter.”

The firearm involved has been recovered and confirmed to be illegal.
