Police Sound Alarm After Deadly Motorcycle Crashes

Four lives lost in just a few days; police are sounding the alarm after a string of deadly motorcycle crashes. Several of these accidents involved riders doubling up and losing control, with tragic consequences. Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith says road safety operations have been stepped up to curb these incidents. And here’s a staggering figure, this year alone, more than one thousand, eight hundred arrests have been made for traffic violations. Stacy Smith has more on what’s being done to keep our roads safe.

ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer

“For quite some time, the department, along with the ministry of transport have been engaging in joint operations with a view to curb these incidents, The police department has been conducting operations. For this year alone, a total of one thousand eight hundred, forty-six arrests have been made for traffic offences and violations. One hundred and sixty of those are in relation to persons who are arrested under the suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. So there has been extensive operation and enforcement approach by the department. Currently forty or so police officers and transport officers are engaged in a training with a view to see how the enforcement can be ramped up and I do know discussions are being had and steps are made to amend  the legislation because certainly as it stands now, the legislation does not serve the deterrence purpose since many person continues to violate the law. I believe some of the legislations seen would include the increase of penalty, the implementation of new offenses and maybe even criminal sentences  because traditionally he traffic area is known to be one that is just fines but it would want to appear that there is a need to move to a new more stringent legislative provisions”
