Port Authority Denies Approving New Fares for Split Crossing
The Belize Port Authority (BPA) says it has not approved any new fares for transportation services across the Split in Caye Caulker Village.
The BPA said it became aware of information online claiming new fares had been set, including a $60 round-trip charge for golf carts with additional per-passenger fees and $5 per person each way for those walking or travelling by bicycle. The BPA says that information is incorrect and that it has not approved these fares or any increase to existing rates for the service.
The clarification follows a meeting the BPA held with operators on Friday, August 28th, aimed at standardising services for those transporting people and golf carts across the Split. The meeting covered safety requirements, relevant legislation, regulatory compliance, and the BPA’s expectations for how the service should operate.
Current fares charged by various operators were also discussed, with the goal of establishing a standardised fare structure the BPA describes as fair and reasonable without placing undue burden on users. Operators have been asked to submit information and justification supporting any proposed fares, which the BPA says it will assess and consult on before making any decision on approval.
