Powerful Quake Shakes Costa Rica, No Major Damage Reported
A powerful earthquake rocked southern Costa Rica Tuesday night, shaking communities and sending tremors through the capital. The 6.0 magnitude quake struck just before ten p.m., about sixty-two kilometers south of San José, at a depth of thirty-one kilometers. Residents described the shaking as strong but brief, lights swayed, items tumbled off shelves, and the tremor was felt far and wide, from Quepos near the epicenter to Puerto Limón over one hundred and forty kilometers away. So far, authorities report no casualties or major damage, but they’re checking structures and monitoring for aftershocks. Experts say details like the exact magnitude and epicenter could change as more data comes in. Central America sits on a volatile boundary between the Cocos and Caribbean plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the hemisphere.
