Prime Minister Unaware of Possible BTS Strike
Talks of a possible strike are brewing at the Belize Tax Service, but Prime Minister John Briceño says he hasn’t heard of it. The issue reportedly stems from the government’s plan to move the Belize Tax Service (BTS) into a semi-autonomous body known as the Statutory Authority Revenue Agency (SARA). A reform aimed at improving efficiency and accountability in tax administration.
When asked about the possibility of a strike, the Prime Minister said, “Well, you’re giving me news. I’m not aware of it.”
He added that while workers have a right to protest, his government will seek clarification from the relevant authorities. “As I always say, it is your right as a citizen that if you want to strike or not, that’s on them,” Briceño stated.
Briceño said the transition is intended to enhance public service delivery and strengthen oversight. “What is important behind SARA is to be able to move it into a semi-autonomous body and a better service to our citizens,” he explained. “And also to hold upon the employees that provide that service. That’s very important for us.”
The Public Service Union had previously written directly to the Prime Minister, and more than a month after their first position letter, which warned of serious risks to national revenue and the welfare of its members, they said they did not receive even an acknowledgement.
Today, the Prime Minister did not confirm whether discussions with the union representing BTS employees have yet taken place.
