PSU Calls on Youth to Lead the Charge on Public Issues
PSU President Dean Flowers is sending a strong message to Belizean youths: take a stand against corruption and demand better from your leaders. His call comes as violent crime continues to spike in Belize City, leaving many worried about safety and justice. Flowers says the government must act swiftly, not only to protect citizens but to ensure fair and transparent investigations for those accused. He warns that if pressure isn’t applied now, the country could face serious consequences down the road. Here’s more on what he had to say.
Dean Flowers, President, Public Service Union
“It’s really concerning the state of affairs where the security of our citizenry is concerned. I want to, of course applaud the police department for the swiftness with which they have been able to capture some of the culprits, especially that double murder in Hattieville. That is one example of the police doing a good job when they choose to do what is concerning however, is when the spokesperson would say that whilst the investigation is ongoing, they would’ve already arrested and charged somebody. The investigation is ongoing, but then you have the deputy commissioner saying that the investigation is ongoing. In another case where a citizen was abducted and where he also confessed to having evidence that clearly points to an individual or to individuals, and yet they have chosen not to make an arrest. In that case, I’m it speaks again to what we’re, what we have to do deal with as citizens that even now the law is very selective in who they will persecute despite the mountain of evidence that is before them. But we’re hoping that. The time will come when the Gen Zs of today will stand up and demand that. I keep saying this is no longer a fight for the Gen X and the baby boom boomers and it’s for the Gen Zs. And I hope they’re taking note of what is occurring in other parts of the world. And I hope that they understand that, if they do what they need to do, they will get the kind of country that they are deserving of in the future.”
