Is the Briceño administration listening to the people, or has it lost touch with the concerns of everyday Belizeans? Former UDP mayor Darrell Bradley says the disconnect is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, and he claims even some Cabinet ministers recognize the problem. Bradley points to the public outrage surrounding the Mira Millions controversy as one example of growing dissatisfaction. He argues that Belizeans cannot separate the country’s social and economic conditions from the quality of the leaders they elect.

“I would not want to throw mud on the wall, but I would say I have heard recent government ministers come out and say this. So, I don’t have to say it, ministers of government are saying it, and I think people are feeling it. You are feeling like a government that is out of touch. If you notice the issues, because I have often times follow the news, you will notice that every six months there is a major issue in relation to apparent injustice and these are things that are coming from the government and people are saying that these are things are things we want to address. The Mira issue, that is a huge issue going on in society and people are outraged. They want answers, but if you don’t have a heart for accountability and transparency, you will never have it. So, good people may make good laws, but good laws do not make good people. It is quality of the leader that you select. If you select a good leader, you will have a good society. If you have bad leaders, you will have a bad society.”

We will have more from our interview with Bradley in a subsequent newscast.
