More than 1,500 People’s United Party delegates from across the six districts filled the Belmopan Comprehensive School for its National Party Council on Sunday, including standard bearers and grassroots supporters. This is according to a statement from the party.

The meeting marked the PUP’s 75th anniversary and the tenth year of Prime Minister John Briceño’s leadership. “We have 75 years strong, and still going,” Briceño said during his address.

The council formalised several positions. Members renewed their backing of Briceño as leader, endorsed the decision to pause talks on the proposed acquisition of Speednet/SMART by Belize Telemedia Limited, and shared support for the Public Utilities Commission’s public consultation process.

Delegates also endorsed the final stage of the national rollout of the National Health Insurance programme under the 2026 Bill and reaffirmed support for the Million Tree Initiative.

On the NHI expansion, Briceño said, “This week, we are signing the contracts for the National Health Insurance here in the Cayo District, where 80 thousand more of our Belizeans will have access to NHI,” he said. “By signing those contracts, then we can say we are offering NHI from Corozal all the way to Toledo District; every single Belizean man, woman, and child has access to the NHI.”

PM Briceño added that his administration is preparing for municipal elections in March 2027, stating, “I am confident that next year… we are going to win every single municipal election.”
