A late-night blaze on Racecourse Street left one home in ruins and two vehicles destroyed. It happened just after midnight on Friday. When firefighters arrived, the two-story wooden house was already engulfed in flames. Inside was sixty-four-year-old Harriet Smith. She reported that she woke up to the sound of an explosion, saw the lower flat on fire, and managed to escape unharmed. Unfortunately, the fire didn’t just take her home, it also destroyed a white Toyota Camry worth nineteen thousand dollars and another vehicle parked nearby. One of those cars belonged to Deon Longsworth, who shared his frustration with us after the loss.

”I was asleep. I gone sleep late. I was up like eleven thirty, so by the time I sleep I was in a deep quad. So like after twelve my wife wake me up and I said, somebody bang on the door. You know? So I get up and I check the door and everybody say, hey, fire. But by the time before I reach the door, I could see the light glaring through the window, through the door. So I kind of figured out that it was fire, open the door and it was like an oven, like you know, the two story, the up and down was on fire. So my thing is, all right, and I don’t think it might cross the street. But the amount of the fire dropping on the side could start a fire in the yard . After that, I came that yard, you know, we try to get a hose just in case the fire thing start to the plants to try and out it. Even after, the whole top of the house collapsed on the car, everything get fire, it was burning for a while.”
