Rearrested: Duo Back in Court for Brutal Attack
It’s déjà vu in court for two Belize City men accused of a brutal attack on former city councilor Deannie Requena. Just last week, their case was struck out for lack of prosecution, but today, they were back before a magistrate, facing the very same charges. Thirty-one-year-old fisherman Burton Claire and twenty-two-year-old tour guide Kareem Allen are accused of stabbing Requena and robbing her of three thousand dollars before leaving her for dead. The DPP’s office has ordered police to rearrest and proceed with the case, which means the men will now stand trial in the lower court. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges, Claire for wounding and use of deadly means of harm, and Allen for theft and aggravated assault with a firearm. They were granted bail of six thousand dollars each and are due back in court on September eighteenth. The case stems from an August 2024 attack on the George Price Highway, and after more than a year of delays, the question now is: will this time be different?
