Referee Assaulted After PLB Match

The Premier League of Belize (PLB) has condemned the assault of a referee following Thursday night’s Port Loyola FC vs. Progresso FC match at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. The official was attacked after the final whistle, an incident the league called “unacceptable” and a direct threat to the integrity and safety of Belizean football.

The PLB expressed full support for the injured referee and praised the swift response of the Belize Police Department, which prevented the situation from escalating. The league also commended match personnel who acted professionally during the disturbance.

In response, the PLB has rolled out immediate mandatory security measures for all sanctioned matches, including increased police and security presence, especially for high-risk games and controlled access zones to strictly separate referees, players, technical staff, and spectators.

According to the league, the new measures aim to prevent a repeat of the incident and ensure a safer environment at football events nationwide.
