Rural Toledo Kids Deserve the Same Chances
Two rural villages are stepping into a new era of opportunity and improved living conditions following the launch of community digital hubs and upgraded water, sanitation and hygiene systems in Santa Elena and Na Luum Ca.
The initiative, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Belize in partnership with the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government and UNICEF Belize, aims to bridge the digital divide while improving essential services for residents.
“It’s not fair that children, because they live in rural Toledo, don’t have the opportunity to see those things, touch those things, use those things, simply because they live in a small village way to the back,” said Valentino Shal, CEO in the Ministry of Rural Transformation.
“That is not the kind of society we want in Belize. We want one where every child has the same opportunity. Every child drink the same clean water. Every child has the same opportunity to education,” he added.
The initiative marks the first time that schools in these communities have access to digital learning spaces, potable water, and internet connectivity, which is expected to significantly improve conditions for students.
The project, known as NDC-SOLAR, integrates renewable energy and water solutions aimed at protecting the environment while supporting long‑term development.
The ministry also handed over additional water meters and accessories to the San Jose/Na Luum Ca Water Board to support the expansion of the community’s water system.
