Ryan Budna Detained in Guatemala: Report

A news outlet in Peten, Guatemala, is reporting that Joseph Ryan Budna has been “recaptured in Melchor de Mencos.”

It said that Budna, who had escaped custody twice in Guatemala, including from the San Benito Hospital in Petén, was detained once again and remains wanted under an international arrest warrant for the crime of escape, issued on June 11, 2019, by the Third Pluripersonal Criminal Execution Court of Guatemala.

But while the Guatemalan report states that Budna was recaptured in Petén, we know that Budna ‘disappeared’ in front of the Orange Walk Police Station in Orange Walk Town, Belize, on Friday night.

The conflicting accounts raise new questions about how Budna crossed back into Guatemala and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance from police view in Belize.
