Santa Familia Ranchers Call for Action Amid Suspected Screwworm Outbreak

Farmers in the Santa Familia area are raising concerns over a growing number of cattle deaths they believe are tied to screwworm infestation. One farmer told News Five the response from authorities has not matched the scale of the problem.

He says the signs have been visible for nearly ten months, but the situation has worsened significantly in recent weeks. What started as isolated cases has spread into a wider concern shared by multiple farmers across the area. So far, he has lost five animals, three calves and two adult cows, despite treating two of the affected calves.

“This is not just affecting one farm,” the farmer said. “It’s a growing issue that could impact livestock, livelihoods, and food supply if not addressed quickly.”

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) has visited farms and tagged cattle, but farmers say they have not yet seen a coordinated response or official report.

The screwworm parasite, known for attacking wounds in livestock, has historically posed serious threats to animal health and food supply across the region. Left untreated, infestations can be fatal and spread rapidly through a herd.

“It’s already affecting farmers directly, and many of us are worried about how widespread it may already be,” the farmer said. “We need more awareness and stronger action from the authorities.”
