Second Person Killed in Less Than a Month by Highway House Collision

Dean Perez, 38, became the second person in under a month to die following a collision with a house being transported on the George Price Highway near Mile 18 on Wednesday night.

Reports are that Perez was travelling east towards Belize City when he ran into the house.

Family members have expressed profound grief and heartbreak online. One relative said, “When mama was on her dying bed she said Cher take care of your brothers and sister. I did. I am trying. I love my siblings like my own children. Dean, you hurt me so, so bad. No matter what you always come see me… Rise in beautiful glory, my love.”

Just over two weeks ago, on November 29, 53-year-old Julian Bol was killed in a similar accident on the Thomas Vincent Highway.

The two tragedies have raised serious concern over road safety and the transport of oversized loads in Belize.

In August, the Department of Transport announced a new regulation restricting the transport of houses and oversized structures on public roads to between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. daily. The measure intended to reduce traffic congestion, property damage, and blocked roadways during peak hours.
