On Thursday, senators debated a motion on a partial scope trade agreement between Belize and El Salvador. The agreement is meant to strengthen commercial and economic ties between the two countries. The opposition criticized the government for not providing enough details before the debate.  Business Senator, Kevin Herrera, on the other hand, explained why this agreement is forward thinking.

“Senator Wade was telling me just this morning that a lot of, some of our oil that comes in, petroleum products that comes to Belize is coming through El Salvador. And so to me, it only makes a lot of sense that we continue to expand the trade agreements with a lot of our neighbors, and also especially coming out of the whole colonial era and the colonial era of thinking, we kept on thinking about going north and getting our products in Europe. But what we need to realize more is that the economies around us, Latin America is one of the fastest growing economy. And I think the more we can look closer to home with respect to market access, the more beneficial it will be for our producers.”

The Senate approved the motion.
