At least eight people are dead and 90 injured after a gas tanker carrying more than 13,000 gallons of propane crashed and exploded on Wednesday in the crowded district of Iztapalapa, according to local news outlets. The blast tore through the Iztapalapa district and set more than two dozen vehicles on fire.

Video footage of the aftermath showed survivors fleeing in panic, many with severe burns. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed that 67 people remain in hospital, some with burns over their entire bodies. Twenty-two of them are in critical condition. Among the injured are a baby and a two-year-old child.

“This is a horrible accident,” Brugada said.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to families and commended emergency teams. “The National Coordination of Civil Protection, National Guard, Secretariat of Defense, and the network of hospitals of the Government of Mexico are collaborating with the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, and the authorities of Mexico City to assist those affected.

The tanker bore the logo of Silza Transport, which denied responsibility. Regulators said the vehicle lacked updated insurance required to carry hazardous cargo. Silza later claimed it had three active policies and promised support for victims’ families.

The accident has renewed scrutiny of the thousands of propane trucks that cross Mexico each day. Previous tanker accidents have caused mass casualties.
