Snapchat to Start Charging for Saved Photos and Videos
Snapchat has announced that users will soon have to pay to keep old photos and videos stored in the app’s Memories feature. This change affects people who have saved more than 5GB of content.
Memories has been free since 2016, letting users save snaps that would normally disappear after 24 hours. But now, Snapchat says users with large archives will need to upgrade to a paid plan to keep their content. Many users are upset as they face either losing years of saved memories or paying to keep them. On social media, reactions have been strong, with many calling the change “greedy” and “unfair”.
Snapchat will offer 12 months of temporary storage and let users download their content. A basic 100GB plan will cost $1.99 USD per month, while larger plans are included in Snapchat+ and Premium subscriptions.
Snap says the change will help improve the Memories feature and support future updates. However, experts believe this signals a trend, suggesting other social media apps may soon start charging for storage too.
