Softball and Football Blowout Dominates Weekend Sports
Good evening, I am Paul Lopez here with this week’s installment of Sports Monday proudly brought to you by the National Sports Council of Belize. We open tonight’s edition on the softball pitch in Sandhill Village.
It was a race to the National Women’s Softball Championship over the weekend. Belize City and Belize rural teams faced off for the top four qualifying spots. Our camera’s captured the match between powerhouses Beacon and Bulldogs under the Friday night lights. It was all out war across seven innings. Bulldogs saw their best performance in the second inning, scoring a total of three runs. Beacons only scored one run in that inning. And they were able to score an additional run in four of the five following innings, all while holding the Bulldogs to three runs. In the end, the Beacons emerged victorious.
And then on Saturday, it was redemption time for the Bulldogs in their match against Wolfpack. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the third inning and a third run in the fourth inning. And it was all they needed to defeat their opponents, because Wolfpack scored zero runs across seven innings. And so the four teams that will be representing the east in the upcoming National; Women’s Softball Championships are Beacons, Bulldogs, Wolfpack and Beverly Hills Flames. We will be in Camalote over the weekend to provide coverage of the event.
It’s not often that the Premier League of Belize features games with finals scores that has everyone asking, what exactly happened on the football field. But that was exactly the case over the weekend when Progresso FC defeated Wagiya SC twelve goals to zero. That is an average of one goal being scored every seven and a half minutes. The onslaught continued for the entire match with Wagiya unable to mount a response. The disappointment on the faces of players and fans alike was evident.
And finally, for tonight, Trent Hardwick’s time at the Central American and Caribbean Games officially came to an end over the weekend. The Belizean sailor finished ninth overall in a highly competitive group of participants. The Belize Sailing Association says it is incredibly proud of Trent’s efforts and the way he represented the country on the international stage.
