Southern Belize Mourns Business Giant Tony Zabaneh

From the banana industry to the Port of Big Creek, Antonio “Tony” Zabaneh helped build the economic and social foundations of southern Belize. But his influence extended far beyond business. For decades, he invested his time and leadership in community development, sports and the People’s United Party, mentoring generations along the way. Zabaneh passed away on October twenty-first, prompting tributes from across the country. His nephew, Minister Henry Charles Usher, remembers “Tio Tony” as a giant of the south whose legacy will endure for generations.

“He is my uncle. I grew up calling him Tio Tony. He is a giant of the south. I call him a man for all seasons. He was able to be a community builder, a sports enthusiast. He funded sports teams. Many of the sports stars you see in various fields, in cycling, football, boxing, came out of his camp. He was also there for me personally, in terms of my uncle supporting me in my political journey, making sure he gave that advice, gave that guidance. So it was a big blow when I heard the news on Wednesday. Sometimes it is inevitable. But it is still hard to hear. I went to see him when he was here in Belize City. I went to see him in the hospital and we had very good conversations. He kept telling me to continue working, continue serving. One of his heroes was George Price and he always worked closely with George Price. And George Price is the Father of Independence and I always use to tell Tio Tony, you are the father of Independence Village.”
