Spirit Airlines to Launch Belize-Fort Lauderdale Flights
Earlier this week, the Belize Tourism Board announced that Spirit Airlines is coming to Belize and will be making three weekly flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida starting November twenty-first. Spirit is considered an ultralow cost carrier, so it is no surprise that they are promoting an introductory one-way fare starting at eighty-five U.S. dollars. Today, Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler, told us more about the agreement and how it came to be.

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism
“It is an ultra low cost carrier and it is important because you had pretty much a monopoly with American going into Maya and the prices were high because they would focus on yields like most airlines and so this will keep them a bit honest and give travelers and option at least.”

“How did it come to be?”
Anthony Mahler
“Just continuous courting, talking, approaching them, having meetings with them, especially when we go to the conferences and then we do one and one trips to ensure we have that one and one contact with the decision makers in those airlines.”
Reporter
“How long did it take?”
Anthony Mahler
“Not as long as other, probably two years.”
Reporter
“I understand there are two other airlines?”
Anthony Mahler
“We don’t usually say anything before, but we are in negotiations with two other airlines.”
Reporter
“Are they in the U.S.?”
Anthony Mahler
“Caribbean and Mexico, and hopefully South America.”
