Tackling Obesity in Belize with the Ministry of Health and Wellness
Obesity in Belize is on the rise, and it is becoming one of the country’s most pressing public health concerns. On the morning show segment, “Tackling Obesity in Belize with the Ministry of Health and Wellness,” hosts Sabreena Daly and Isani Cayetano sat down with Robyn Daly, Technical Advisor for Nutrition, and Dr. Golda Mejia, Primary Health Care Coordinator for the Central Health Region, to discuss the alarming statistics and what can be done to reverse the trend.
Representatives from the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) highlighted that obesity is linked to serious non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, all of which are affecting more Belizean families each year. The growing numbers among both adults and children signal the need for urgent and sustained action.
Robyn Daly explained that obesity does not happen overnight. It develops over time due to a combination of unhealthy eating habits, high consumption of sugary and processed foods, and limited physical activity. However, she stressed that it is preventable and manageable with the right lifestyle changes.
A key takeaway from the discussion was that healthy living begins at home. Parents and caregivers set the foundation for children’s eating patterns and attitudes toward physical activity. Preparing balanced meals, encouraging water instead of sugary drinks, monitoring portion sizes, and making time for exercise are simple but powerful steps families can take.
Dr. Mejia emphasized the importance of early prevention. Teaching children about proper nutrition and the value of staying active helps build lifelong habits. She noted that tackling obesity is not about restrictive dieting but about making healthier choices consistently.
Beyond the home, schools and workplaces also play a major role. Children spend a significant portion of their day at school, where access to healthy meals and physical education can positively shape their habits. Similarly, adults spend much of their time at work, making workplace wellness initiatives essential. Encouraging active breaks, healthier food options, and overall wellness programs can make a meaningful impact.
The Ministry continues to promote public education campaigns, community outreach, and primary healthcare interventions aimed at reducing obesity rates. Healthcare providers are working to increase screening, counseling, and early intervention to help Belizeans manage their weight and prevent related diseases.
The message from both guests was clear: obesity can be controlled, but it requires a collective effort. It starts at home, extends to schools and workplaces, and must be supported by national health initiatives.
As the segment concluded, viewers were reminded that small, consistent lifestyle changes can lead to lasting health improvements — and together, Belize can build a healthier future.
