Belizean shrimp soon to be served on plates across Taiwan. After more than two years of paperwork, inspections, and back-and-forth between Belize and Taiwan, the long-awaited approval was announced today during the second meeting of the Administrative Commission under the Belize–Taiwan Economic Cooperation Agreement, held in Taiwan.
Twelve aquaculture facilities in Belize are now cleared to export, which will give local producers access to one of Asia’s top seafood markets. Taiwan imported over USD 349 million in shrimp each year between 2020 and 2024, and Belize is now in that mix.
“With this new market access, producers are well-positioned to scale up operations and unlock even greater value through renewed investment and market-driven growth,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
The delegation also met with Taiwan’s largest seafood importer, Yen & Brothers Company Limited, which already buys Belizean lobster and is eyeing shrimp next.
