Taiwan’s Foreign Minister came to Belize promising more than diplomatic goodwill. His official visit opened discussions on trade, investment and new opportunities to strengthen Belize’s economy. But those talks also drew sanctions from China. Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Katherine Meighan, traveled home for the visit and says the potential benefits for Belize could be significant. “I’m very optimistic. There is just a lot of promise that comes from all the work we have been taking about. So what we have been doing quite a bit is assessing the various ways that Taiwan has been helping us and assessing to evaluate how we can enhance what we are currently doing and working to collaborate and add to those angles as well. For example, trade and investment, there are some huge opportunities in these areas and what Taiwan has been working on as a gift , as a support to Belize, is to help Belize to build its own ecosystem, just as how TMC has built its own ecosystem here. That means educating people, getting them back to Belize. Finding the resources and finding the facilities and organizations that can help to capacitate and share information, trade secrets, information that can have Belize be different and elevated and able to compete in a global world.”
