Task Force Notes Decrease in Sargassum Along Belize’s Coast

There is good news on the horizon for Belize’s coast where sargassum is concerned. The Sargassum Task Force met today and coming out of that meeting, Minister of Blue Economy, Andre Perez, says the mats of sargassum washing up on Belize’s shores have been decreasing. But the task force is not declaring the sargassum invasion over just yet. Minister Perez told us why.

“I just came out from a meeting from Sargassum Task Force. While we don’t want to declare sargassum season is over and our neighbors have already declared it over because the waters are very clear right now, it went from one extreme to the next, however that meeting continues. Sargassum is here to stay. It is coming next year again. We are actually discussing how to better prepare, how to be proactive, and there is a lot of technology available to track down these sargassum when it comes to the island. That is another discussion. Getting more equipment and at the cost, all of that was on the table to discuss at the sargassum task force. It is anticipating. We don’t sit here and say sargassum gone, let us worry about it next year. We have to prepare, so next season we are better prepared to mitigate.”
