Tensions Flare in Indian Creek Over ‘Unannounced’ MLA Visit
The community of Indian Creek in Toledo is once again in turmoil after what villagers believed was a Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meeting on Sunday, September 14, turned out to involve the Maya Leaders Alliance (MLA).
“The village council, along with the community, was not aware of such a meeting with MLA. All the community was aware of was a meeting hosted by the PTA,” one villager said.
According to the village’s chairman, Domingo Choc, tensions rose at the community centre, and one resident claimed another confrontation nearly broke out.
“It is the alcalde who is to be responsible for this, as he did not let the community and the Village Council know of any such meeting beside the MLA,” he said.
Footage shows villagers expressing discontent as MLA representative Cristina Coc left. “The community of Indian Creek does not want anything to do with MLA,” Choc added.
This latest incident comes only a month after a “peaceful protest” in the village spiralled into chaos over fines, leadership disputes, and ongoing tensions between Maya customary law and the Village Council system.
