The Audubon Society Addresses Viral Sargassum Covering at Blue Hole

A viral image showing Belize’s Great Blue Hole covered in sargassum raised public concern as the seaweed continues to choke the country’s coastlines.

The Belize Audubon Society addressed the concerns on social media, sharing a video captured by park rangers on Saturday morning that shows the waters around the Blue Hole largely clear.

“You may have seen a less-than-flattering photo of the Blue Hole making the rounds recently, but don’t worry! What you’re seeing is just a temporary event: free-floating sargassum passing over the area,” the Society said.

It added, “Since the Blue Hole is completely submerged with no surrounding land for the sargassum to settle on, this seaweed simply drifted by and has since moved along.”

The organisation reassured the public that the Blue Hole remains “as breathtaking as ever,” with divers and visitors continuing to enjoy its crystal-clear waters and world-renowned underwater beauty.
