Three Killed, 10 Injured in Turks and Caicos’ First Mass Shooting

Three young men were shot dead and 10 others injured in what officials are calling the Turks and Caicos Islands’ first mass shooting. The incident happened early Sunday at a popular nightspot on Providenciales, the territory’s main island.

The local Police Commissioner Fitz Bailey said at least four suspects were involved. No arrests have been made. “It is deeply disturbing,” he said.

Premier Charles Washington Misick described it as a “gangland-type slaying,” adding that the violence appears concentrated in the Haitian community. “What is happening here is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. This is not a situation we should accept,” he said.

Misick urged residents to assist police and expose how guns are entering the islands.

Acting Governor Anya Williams confirmed the hospital in Providenciales was placed on lockdown for security reasons. Two victims were flown abroad for treatment.

The U.S. has maintained a Level 2 travel advisory for the territory since March, stating that “most crime occurs in Providenciales.”

Meanwhile, regional agencies like the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and CARICOM IMPACS are ramping up efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking across the Caribbean.
