Too Young to Drive? Transport CEO Questions Bus Operator’s Age

Back in late June, a young life was cut short along the George Price Highway. Sixteen-year-old high school student Tyrel Cardines lost his life after being hit by a Floralia bus in Hattieville. While the Ministry of Transport isn’t directly involved in the investigation, the incident has led to serious reflection. CEO Chester Williams says it’s time to take a closer look at who’s behind the wheels; specifically, how young is too young to be driving a passenger bus. He believes the driver in this case may have been too inexperienced, and that could lead to changes in the rules moving forward.

“At this time, the only thing we are looking at basically is the age of the driver. We believe the driver of the bus at that moment was too young to be able to drive a bust of that size. So, we are looking at reviewing the laws to increase the age to get a license to drive public transportation, i.e., a bus.”
