Tornado Kills Six, Injures Hundreds in Brazil

A powerful tornado struck Brazil’s southern state of Paraná on Friday night. At least six people were killed and more than 750 were injured, state officials said.

Brazilian authorities reported that the tornado reached speeds above 155 miles per hour and left widespread destruction across the city.

Resident Roselei Dalcandon told AFP News, “It destroyed everything. It destroyed the town, houses, and schools. What will become of us?” as she stood beside the rubble of her former shop.

Authorities confirmed that five of the dead were adults and one was a 14-year-old girl. Another person remains missing, and the number of displaced families continues to rise.

Around 90% of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu suffered damage, according to civil defence officials.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva shared his support for the victims on social media. His Cabinet confirmed that emergency aid is being sent to the affected areas.

The tragedy unfolds as Brazil hosts COP30 in Belém, where global leaders are discussing climate resilience. The storm’s devastation adds urgency to calls of vulnerable nations for stronger disaster readiness, climate finance, and early-warning systems.
