Traffic Officer Charged with Aggravated Assault

A 33-year-old traffic officer has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault following an early morning incident outside a nightclub on New Town Barracks in Belize City.

Rodney Card reported to police that he had just left a nightclub in the wee hours of Saturday morning and was walking toward his vehicle, which was parked in a nearby lot, when he noticed two women fighting. He said he attempted to de-escalate the altercation when a man approached him and told him to leave the women alone.

The man allegedly pulled a pistol from his waistband and cocked it in a threatening manner.

Police officers who were in the area intervened and detained 33-year-old Ignatius Peyrefitte, identified as a Belizean transport officer.

Peyrefitte was formally arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
