Transport Ministry Steps Up Holiday Road Safety Enforcement
As Christmas celebrations intensify across the country, transport authorities are increasing enforcement on the highways amid concerns over road safety during the holiday season. Officials say the annual spike in traffic, alcohol consumption, and long-distance travel has historically led to deadly crashes, prompting a renewed push to prevent tragedies.
The Ministry of Transport says highway patrols and traffic wardens have already intensified operations nationwide, particularly during evenings and weekends. Chief Executive Officer Chester Williams said the focus is on motorists most likely to commit serious infractions, including driving under the influence.
“I can say to you that over the past few weeks we have stepped up our enforcement efforts,” Williams said. “You would see that in the evening time and on weekends, we have our wardens all over the country doing operations, targeting those motorists who have the propensity of committing infractions.”
Williams confirmed that arrests have already been made. “We have been able to make a number of arrests for driving under influence and other offenses,” he said, adding that enforcement will be further intensified over the holiday weekend.
He noted that authorities are aware that alcohol consumption increases during the Christmas season, making enforcement critical. “We do understand that this is the yuletide season and many people will use this time of the year to consume alcohol while traversing on our highways,” Williams said. “And we have to ensure that we make our highways here for our road users.”
Williams issued a direct warning to motorists. “If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. If you’re going to drive, then don’t drink,” he said. “Because we will be out there and I’m sure that the police department will also be out there in full force doing their part as well to ensure that we keep our roadways safe.”
The Ministry says motorists can expect increased checkpoints and patrols across the country. “Yes, you’ll see our highway patrols and our checkpoints on the highways doing enforcement,” Williams confirmed. He urged drivers to cooperate if stopped. “If it is that you get held up in a line for a little, just be patient. It’s a matter is a part of our effort to ensure that your time on the highway is safe.”
