Tren Maya Expansion Could Boost Belize Trade
The proposed expansion of Mexico’s Tren Maya is raising both opportunities and concerns in the region. For Belize, the project could boost trade with Mexico and Guatemala and strengthen its role as the bridge between Latin America and the Caribbean. Prime Minister John Briceño shared how this connection could open new markets for Belizean products.

“Well we have the foreign minister with us, the minister of energy, Minister Chebat, the CEO for Foreign Affairs and he CEO for Investment in my office, along with Ambassador Jaime Briceno and the Ambassador to Mexico. We have the other issues, the trade issues, the issues of Tren Maya how to get it to come into Belize and get it to Guatemala, the issues of trade, we want to sell more of our products to Mexico and to Guatemala, and obviously that the duties will be lower so that we can be competitive. That is important to us, continue to make the point that Belize is the link for Mexico and Guatemala and CARICOM. So we need to start to continue not only to speak, but to demonstrate how important Belize is to connect these two countries to the CARICOM countries.”
