Trevet Campos Takes KTV Remix Season 8 Crown
A countrywide blackout could not dim the energy at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts last night, where 23-year-old Trevet Campos was crowned winner of KTV the Remix Season 8.
The 23-year-old beat Tiana Sterling and Judson Baker in the final three to take home the $10,000 grand prize after weeks of competition amongst 12 contestants.
According to Campos, the stage was never unfamiliar. He found his voice as a child, singing in church at his mother’s encouragement, who also signed him up for this year’s competition.
During his appearance on this morning’s Open Your Eyes, Campos looked back on what it took to reach the final two performances of his life on that stage.
“It was a lot. Having my team and band, but it was beautiful,” he said. “I believe that if people spend their money on me, I’m supposed to be able to give them a show. And it’s the last, so I was supposed to come and make people enjoy the last of it.”
By his own account, Campos entered the finale night with near total confidence. He said he was “99.999 percent” certain he would take home the win. He credited his relentless final stretch of campaigning.
“Whole of last week, from Wednesday night straight through to Friday night, I was at karaoke places singing, putting myself out there,” Campos said. “Even if people don’t know me or watch the show, and they see me perform and hear my voice, they’d say, ‘I have to vote for this guy, because he sounds good.’ It’s all about campaigning and putting yourself out there. And I wasn’t shame.”
Some of that late campaign strategy came from Season 7 winner Darlon Usher, who gave Campos a few effective tips. He said, “Darlon told me, unbutton your shirt a little bit, use the girls and let that get to you and channel that to your performance… He also gave me the strategy to reach out to big businesses.”
Campos now plans to invest his winnings and eventually open his own studio. He also wants to continue promoting country music in Belize taking from his inspiration artist, Morgan Wallen as his blueprint. “He has a really good back story,” Campos said. “He went to The Voice, and they rejected him. And now he is on the top 10 on the Billboards in country music every single year.”
The 23-year-old hopes his story at KTV the Remix could inspire next year’s emerging Belizean voices. “It’s all about campaigning and putting yourself out there,” he said.
