US President Donald Trump has given Iran 48 hours to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face military strikes on its power plants.

On Saturday, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST.”

He also claimed the U.S. military campaign against Iran has gone better than expected, saying the country’s leadership has been wiped out and its defences destroyed ahead of schedule. Those claims have not been independently verified.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil supply routes, and its closure has already sent fuel prices soaring above $100 USD per barrel, fuelling fears of global inflation.

Iran responded on Sunday, warning that if Trump carries out his threat, it would attack U.S. infrastructure as well as energy and desalination facilities across the Gulf, Reuters reported. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf wrote on X that critical infrastructure in the Middle East could be “irreversibly destroyed” if Iranian power plants are targeted.

A direct attack on infrastructure such as power plants would cut electricity and disrupt essential services that millions of civilians in Iran depend on every day.
