Trump Orders Marijuana Reclassification
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to fast-track review of its federal classification.
The order would move cannabis out of the most restricted category under US law, where it sits alongside heroin and LSD, and place it in Schedule III. Drugs in this category are recognised as having medical value and include ketamine and Tylenol with codeine.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the move was about “common sense” and helping people living with chronic pain. He made clear that recreational use remains off the table.
“It doesn’t legalise marijuana in any way, shape or form,” Trump said. “So unless a drug is recommended by a doctor for medical reasons, just don’t do it.”
The directive instructs Attorney General Pam Bondi to complete the rescheduling process and issue a final rule. A change to Schedule III would allow the Food and Drug Administration to properly study cannabis for medical use.
According to NBC News, a November Gallup poll shows 64% of Americans support legal marijuana.
