Trump Says Countries Could Face Tariffs Over Greenland
US President Donald Trump says he is considering imposing new tariffs on countries that refuse to support his plan for the United States to control Greenland.
Speaking Friday at the White House, Trump said, “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland… for national security.”
Trump has repeatedly argued that the US must acquire the Arctic territory, which is part of Denmark, claiming it is strategically important for defence and security. His comments mark the first time he has suggested using tariffs to pressure other nations over the Greenland issue.
Denmark has warned that any move against Greenland would effectively end NATO and has begun expanding its military presence on the island. Several European countries, including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, have since announced troop deployments to Greenland, while Canada and France plan to open consulates in the capital, Nuuk.
Despite rising tensions, Denmark says it will continue talks with Washington. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said officials agreed to form a high-level working group with the US to seek “a common way forward”, though he admitted both sides still strongly disagree.
