Trump Says Phone Call With China’s President Was “Excellent”

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone on Wednesday, discussing trade, Taiwan, several global conflicts and other issues.

Trump described the conversation as “excellent” and confirmed plans to visit China, a trip he said he “very much” looks forward to.

“The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said China is considering increasing its purchase of U.S. soybeans to 20 million tonnes this season, with a larger commitment planned for next year. Discussions also included oil and gas purchases, aircraft engine deliveries, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and Iran.

Meanwhile, China’s state media, quoted by the BBC, reported that Xi described Taiwan as “the most important issue” in relations between the two countries and urged Trump to act “prudently” on arms sales to the island.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while the United States remains Taiwan’s main security partner and largest arms supplier. In December, Washington approved an arms sale to Taiwan worth about US$11 billion, a move China strongly criticised.

A day after that call, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te told reporters that relations with the United States remain “rock solid” and cooperation continues.
