Trump Slaps All Countries with New 10% Tariffs

President Donald Trump announced on Friday a new 10% global tariff after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his 2025 tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

The 6-3 decision found that U.S. President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by using the 1977 IEEPA to impose sweeping tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts decided that Trump had claimed “extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope” without legal backing.

Hours later in a press conference, Trump imposed a temporary 10% global tariff under the Trade Act of 1974 instead. He called the ruling “deeply disappointing” and called some justices “very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution.”

The tariff will take effect on February 24 and last for 150 days.
Exceptions include certain agricultural products, critical minerals and metals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and passenger vehicles. The measure aims to curb the outflow of dollars and encourage domestic production.

For products that already had tariffs under unaffected laws, like steel, aluminum, lumber, and automotives, the new 10% could stack with existing tariffs, increasing the total duty.

Trump said via his social media platform that the adjustment process “begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before.”
