Trump Threatens “Imminent Action” Against Cuba

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has condemned recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested he could take “imminent action” against the island.

Díaz‑Canel wrote on the social media platform X that the U.S. administration “publicly threatens” Cuba almost daily and warned that any act of aggression “will clash with an impregnable resistance”.

Trump’s remarks, which have drawn international attention, included claims that he could do “whatever he wants” with Cuba. They also came after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for significant changes to Cuba’s government and economic system.

The rising tension comes as the economic crisis in Cuba has left the island struggling with fuel shortages, power blackouts and food and medicine scarcity. The island’s heavy reliance on imported oil has made it especially vulnerable after the U.S. tightened sanctions and cut off critical supplies from Venezuela, one of Cuba’s main energy partners.

Meanwhile, across Latin America, some countries have reduced or ended agreements with Cuban healthcare workers under US pressure. In Belize, however, the future of the Cuban Medical Brigade remains uncertain.

Prime Minister John Briceño has said the government is engaged in “delicate negotiations”, while Opposition Leader Tracy Panton insists Belize must not bow to external demands. She argues that Cuba has been a steadfast ally, from supporting Belize’s independence to providing critical healthcare, and warns that rural clinics depend heavily on Cuban doctors.
