Trump’s ICE Crackdown in Minnesota Greenlighted to Continue
A US judge has allowed Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration operation led by ICE, to continue despite two deaths and weeks of protests.
Protesters are calling the operation a “federal invasion” and are claiming warrantless arrests, racial profiling and excessive force.
ICE agents have been deployed across the state to arrest undocumented immigrants and enforce deportation orders. Judge Katherine Menendez said the operation has caused “profound and even heartbreaking” effects, including empty classrooms, struggling businesses and pressure on local services. She ruled stopping it would interfere with federal authority.
The Department of Homeland Security called the decision “a win for public safety and law and order,” according to CNN.
Meanwhile, protests also erupted in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC.
While the Trump administration works to contain growing protests in Minnesota, it has created a fresh wave of outrage from free speech and press freedom advocates over the Friday arrests of a former CNN anchor and an independent journalist on charges related to their coverage of a church protest.
