T&T Enters State One Alert Level as PM Calls for Calm
Trinidad and Tobago has placed its Defence Force on the highest level of readiness, ordering all soldiers and Coast Guard officers to report to their bases by 6 p.m. today. A memo circulated to personnel stated plainly, “This is not a drill,” and instructed all ranks to prepare for possible confinement.
The alert, known as State One, signals full operational readiness. Soldiers have been directed to return to key military bases, and even officers on leave have been told to remain on standby. The police force has followed suit, with a separate memo restricting all officer leave until further notice.
While the sudden mobilisation raised speculation about possible unrest or external threats, government officials have urged calm. According to Trinidad Express Newspapers, the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar stated she had no information about any imminent strikes in the region, and further was not aware of the reasoning behind the alert.
Defence Minister Wayne Sturge echoed that sentiment, saying the country had nothing to worry about, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed public anxiety to “false news reports” and clarified that the United States is currently focused on disaster recovery efforts in Jamaica, not military action.
