Tuk-Tuk Eco Tricycles Take Charge
A new chapter in sustainable transportation began today in Belize City with the official launch of Tuk-Tuk Belize Tour Services. The company unveiled the country’s first fleet of electric and solar-powered tuk-tuks during a ceremony at the Belize Memorial Park.
Led by entrepreneur Tanisha Vernon, Tuk-Tuk Belize introduced eight eco-friendly tricycles and one pedal lounge aimed at revolutionising the way locals and visitors explore the city. More than just a ride, the experience is designed to blend education, culture, and fun.
In her address, Vernon shared the personal story that inspired her to bring tuk-tuks to Belize.
“So the inspiration started after Covid, about four years ago,” Vernon explained. “I’m a traveller, and we had a death in our family, and so we visited Peten, Guatemala, and they had the traditional, old-school tuk-tuk. So that split second we were mourning and we were going through our loss, I felt so much joy driving and riding. There was nothing special about it, but for me it had given me a feeling that lived on for a moment, and I was like, How can I bring something like this to Belize?. We are so close to Guatemala; we don’t have anything similar to this in our country. And after that I did my research, and I was lucky to find a manufacturing company that could have customised it in a more environmentally friendly way.”
The tuk-tuks will offer both day and night tours around the city, led by licensed tour guides. Passengers will stop at historical landmarks and museums, gaining insight into Belize’s rich cultural heritage in an engaging and interactive way.
