Twenty Years of Elite Maritime Security

Twenty years ago, the Belize Coast Guard started with just a handful of officers and a big dream, to protect our seas. Fast forward to today, and that dream has grown into a world-class maritime force. This week, the Coast Guard is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special symposium bringing together founding members, senior officers, and international partners. The event not only honored two decades of service but also looked ahead to the future of maritime security in Belize. CEO in the Ministry of Defense, Francis Usher, praised the incredible strides the force has made and even shared a firsthand story of their heroic work.

“The evolution of the Coast Guard into the formidable organization that it is today would not have been possible without the consistent investment of the government of Belize, and also the collaboration with other governmental ministries, non-governmental organizations who operate in the maritime space. And of course, without the unwavering support of our regional and international allies and partners. It is such a pleasure to see so many of you here today who have played such a pivotal role in the development of the Coast Guard.  Just two short days ago, I had the opportunity to see the Coast Guard in full operational swing. Admiral Madden and his team took out myself, minister Marin, minister Fonseca, and CEO Mai to Hunting Key and gave us a briefing on the strategic importance of having the Coast Guard there and, and all the many operational successes that they have been having. As fate would have it just as we arrived back at Big Creek, which serves as the command for sector south, the Coast Guard team got a call from the members of the National Search and Rescue Committee giving details of a vessel that was in distress. Without hesitation, the team sprung into action, went back out to sea and their efforts saved the lives of four civilians who came to Belize to enjoy all the treasures of our jewel.”
