Two Detained After 9 Y/O Girl Dies in Red Bank Village RTA

Two people are in police custody after being involved in a fatal traffic accident in Red Bank Village that claimed the life of 9-year-old Vanessa Cal.

ASP Stacy Smith reported this afternoon that Cal was riding her bicycle when an SUV struck a fence at an intersection, and the child collided with the vehicle. The female driver told police she had intended to brake but accidentally accelerated.

Police say the driver told investigators she had attempted to brake but accidentally accelerated instead.

“The female stated that upon making inspection, she observed the damaged bicycle and Vanessa who exhibited no visible injury and was responsive,” Smith added.

Vanessa was taken to a nearby house, but her condition deteriorated quickly.

Both the driver and a male passenger have been detained pending investigation.

Vanessa’s body awaits a postmortem examination.
